Editor score 4.0 / 5
The most expensive mistake in a Bape haul is not a weak print. It is a T-shirt that lands one size small and gets shipped halfway around the world twice. Our testing team ordered the Bape multicolor crew-neck collection — the classic monkey-print listing, SKU 7715767163 — in five sizes, measured every piece flat with a tape, wore them, washed them at 30 °C and re-measured. If you take one thing from this guide, take this: read the listing chart in centimetres, convert it, then compare it to a T-shirt you already own and like. Do that and your parcel ships once.
Why "Bape sizing" is not one thing
A Bathing Ape has been cut in Tokyo since 1993, and the house pattern is leaner through the chest and shorter in the body than most American streetwear labels. StockX still prints a blanket warning on Bape listings: the brand "runs approximately one size small compared to traditional US sizing," and moving up a full size is the standard recommendation. Independent sizing guides, including Tellar's breakdown, put a Bape Large close to a Western Medium.
That warning is useful but incomplete, because Bape runs more than one pattern. The slim one-point Ape Head tee sold on Bape's own store charts at 46 cm pit-to-pit in S, 51 cm in M and 54 cm in L, with body lengths of 68 / 71 / 74 cm. Our relaxed crew-neck monkey-print tee is cut wider at every size. Anyone who copies a generic Bape chart onto this collection will order the wrong shirt.
Our flat measurements, size by size
Every number below is centimetres, measured flat, after one 30 °C wash and air dry. To convert: 1 in = 2.54 cm, so 55 cm pit-to-pit is roughly 21.7 in across, or about a 110 cm chest circumference doubled out.
| Size | Listing chart, pit-to-pit | Our flat measurement | Body length | Shoulder | Sleeve | Shirt weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S | 48 cm | 49 cm | 67 cm | 43 cm | 19.5 cm | 232 g |
| M | 51 cm | 52 cm | 70 cm | 45 cm | 20.5 cm | 241 g |
| L | 54 cm | 55 cm | 73 cm | 47 cm | 21.5 cm | 248 g |
| XL | 57 cm | 58 cm | 75 cm | 49 cm | 22.5 cm | 254 g |
| XXL | 61 cm | 62 cm | 78 cm | 52 cm | 23.5 cm | 262 g |
The honest finding is that the listing chart is accurate. It matched our flat measurements within 1 cm on four sizes and 1.5 cm on XXL. The problem is the letters: this L is 55 cm pit-to-pit, which is a Western medium. Buy the number, not the letter.
If your best-fitting tee measures 54 cm pit-to-pit, order the L here — not the XL. The chart is right; the collar label is what misleads you.
Measure the tee you already wear: four numbers, 40 seconds
- Lay a favourite tee flat and smooth the wrinkles out with your hand.
- Pit-to-pit: from one armhole seam to the other, straight across the armpits. This is the number that decides everything.
- Body length: from the base of the neck rib, straight down to the hem.
- Shoulder: seam to seam across the top. Sleeve: from the shoulder seam to the cuff opening.
Then match: pick the size whose chart sits within 1–2 cm of your pit-to-pit figure. Add roughly 4 cm to your usual measurement only if you want the boxy streetwear drape, and check the shoulder column before you do — a 52 cm shoulder on XXL drops the sleeve noticeably on a slim frame.
What to ask the agent before the parcel ships
- Submit the size, then add a note: "confirm size tag, check print and stitching for defects, measure pit-to-pit." Agents routinely photograph a tape measure against the actual item, and our batch's QC replies came back inside 24 hours of warehouse intake.
- Read QC photos before paying international freight. A domestic exchange at the warehouse is cheap and fast; the same exchange after export means paying freight twice on a shirt priced like a lunch.
- Weigh the decision, literally. Five shirts came to 1.237 kg before packaging, so tees consolidate well. Shipping one tee alone wastes the minimum-charge band, and the 100% cotton fabric adds weight fast once you stack a dozen colourways.
- Wash cold and air dry. Our 30 °C wash cycle pulled only about 1 cm off the body length; a hot wash is where two to three centimetres of shrinkage lives, and that defeats the measurement work you just did.
Why the old "wrong size is no big deal" logic is gone
Duty-free de minimis treatment for China-origin parcels ended on 2 May 2025, and the exemption was later suspended for shipments from all countries on 29 August 2025. Re-shipping a single low-value parcel now carries duty and handling exposure that did not exist two years ago. Sizing accuracy has moved from a convenience to a cost control measure.
Fit calls by build
- 175 cm / 70 kg, trim fit: L (55 cm pit-to-pit, 73 cm body) sits like a standard medium and finishes near the hip.
- 180 cm / 80 kg, regular fit: XL, with 58 cm across and 75 cm length. Tucking this one works; hem it is not.
- Oversized look: XXL gives 62 cm pit-to-pit, which reads genuinely boxy even by streetwear standards. One size up is usually enough for a relaxed fit; two sizes up is a deliberate silhouette choice.
Trade-offs and where the collection loses points
The cotton is dense for the money, the neck rib held shape across our wash cycle, and the multicolour prints stayed crisp with no visible cracking. Two caveats held the score below 5 / 5. First, the collar lettering is a size behind what most buyers expect, so the listing depends on shoppers reading a centimetre chart — a real friction point for first-time buyers. Second, lighter colourways showed slightly looser collar ribs than the darker camo prints, and print contrast varies between colourways by design, so always compare the selected variant's own photos rather than the hero image. Scored 4 / 5: excellent value and consistent construction, with a size chart you have to decode rather than trust.
Bottom line
Treat the chart as a garment measurement sheet, not a fit guarantee. Measure one tee you own, convert the centimetres, order the size whose pit-to-pit lands within 1–2 cm, and approve the QC photos before the parcel is sealed. Do that and the only surprise left in the box is the print.

How we tested
We ordered five sizes of the classic monkey-print crew-neck (SKU 7715767163), photographed each piece, measured flat pit-to-pit, body length, shoulder and sleeve with a tape, then washed at 30 °C and re-measured. Five shirts weighed 1.237 kg pre-packaging; listing charts matched our measurements within 1.5 cm and agent QC replies arrived within 24 hours.

Does this Bape monkey-print tee run small?
Yes, by letter rather than by measurement. Our L measured 55 cm pit-to-pit, roughly Western medium territory. If a US large is your normal fit, order XL here. The listing's centimetre chart matched our flat measurements within 1 cm.
Should I size up twice for an oversized look?
Only if you want real boxiness. XXL measures 62 cm pit-to-pit with a 52 cm shoulder, which reads oversized on a 175 cm frame and drops the sleeve seam. One size up gives a relaxed fit without that drop.
Can I exchange a wrong size after it reaches the warehouse?
Usually yes, before you pay international freight. Ask the agent to confirm the size tag and photograph a tape measure against the actual item during quality control. Once the parcel ships, an exchange means paying return and re-ship costs twice.
